Reading up on the gemstones that Luna posted brought a question to mind: What are some of the better types of trees and gems for runes? What would you not want to use?
My first set of runes falls into the not use category. They were just crappy stone. Between that and the horrid book they came with no wonder it was years before I picked up the runes again. My current set is made of oak, I think. That is a good strong magical wood but I have not memorized all the properties so I am unsure of what else to say about it. I once saw a set of runes made of sassafras that I really wanted, but did not have the money for. I am not sure if that would be an ideal outlet for runes though, again I do not know the properties. I am also wondering if maybe a set of runes made from lapis lazuli would be a good idea. What are your thoughts?

Definitely. My main set is made from hematite, which really works for me. So long as it is a natural material, anything really goes. The added benefit to stone runes is that it is easier to throw them, rather than just laying them out one at a time. Grabbing a handful of bigger runes (like those made of clay or bigger wood) to cast is somewhat clumsy, at least in my opinion.

That is very true about casting. My wooden runes are smaller though, so I can pick a handful and cast them. I love it because like you, that's my preferred method of using them. My first set were larger and the book gave me the impression I was working with something akin to tarot cards.

Using them like tarot cards and laying them out in a spread just takes some of the magic out of it for me. But then again, I do like things dramatic.

My main set is made of Amethyst (surprise!!!). The wooden ones I made are slightly bigger. I'm trying to make them smaller for everyone else but not too small. I'm not really used to casting them though. As I said in another thread, I have psychic abilities. I just can't seem to channel them into things like tarot cards or runes.

One of the things that has helped me immensely with this, other than being very familiar with the meanings, is to just look at the pattern that the stones fall into. There is a way to divine using cowrie shells, and this form of divination is based exclusively on the patterns that are created. Since you have the amethyst set, try throwing them and see what sort of pattern emerges. When I teach my intro to divination class, I will be discussing this type of divination in detail. While the cowrie shells are common, you can use any basic stones. You can choose wither all the same stones (ie tumbled quartz) or experiment with different stones. If you know the meanings of the stones, then that can also aid in the divination, as well as things like color magic and numerology. There is a lot that will be covered in that class!!!!!! This type of divination is somewhat akin to encouraging visions. For instance, I did a reading for someone using my runes. When I cast them, I typically take a handful from my bag and throw them, then pick out any that so not have the rune facing upward. Then I have my pattern. This is the first thing I interpret. Then I can go into the different meanings of the runes, and how they relate to one another. In this reading in particular, the pattern strongly resembled a paw print, which was significant since the person I was reading for was very into totems. Most of the runes were very nature-based or spiritual-based (I believe Uruz, which represents a gateway, was in the reading). Even though it only consisted of four runes, it ended up being just as powerful, if not more so, than some of the more complicated readings I've done. Out of the two, I think you might be able to read the runes better; try using the methods I've described. Also, you can try to do tarot the way my mother did; after awhile, she didn't even look at the cards, but held them to see what sort of visions she got. My impression is that she was practicing some sort of psychometry.

my first set was also amethyst... and i think they work for me just fine. i don't know a whole lot yet about the runes (still practicing/learning!) but i was able to utilize Hagalaz... which i was given in a dream. i did use the runes once to help my little sister get better from a high fever... but i guessed which ones to use. ^^;
but the wooden ones do sound cool... but i rather use what i was given because i trust them. =D

If you ever do want a set of the wood ones, I've been making them and would send some out to you. It would just be a matter of going to the woods and getting some oak wood.
