Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Breathe in and out. As you breathe in, draw in pure, white, cleansing energy. When you breathe out, exhale any negative energy. Breathe in, and allow the positive energy to relax you. Breathe out, and release all your stress and tension. Focus on your breathing until you feel completely relaxed.
With your eyes still closed, visualize yourself sitting in the middle of a lush, fragrant meadow. The grass beneath you is soft, full, and bright emerald green. In the distance you can see a wooded area. You look up at the sky, and you see the sun starting to set over the trees. The sky is a brilliant display of crimson and gold, mingling with the indigo of twilight. A gentle breeze caresses you, tousling your hair.
You sit there, content to watch the setting sun. However, you notice a light out of the corner of your eye, like a firefly. You get up from your spot on the grass to get a closer look, and it starts retreating into the woods, beckoning you to follow. You slowly walk into the woods, and you immediately realize that this is no ordinary woods. This is a sacred place, and this is no ordinary firefly that has commanded your attention. Its light is unnaturally bright, casting an ethereal glow on your surroundings and illuminating the path in front of you.
As you follow the light, you notice the well-worn path beneath your feet, and you get the sense that many others have made this same journey, perhaps since time began. The trees around you are ancient, yet full of life. The lush foliage from the trees obscures the sky, but you can tell that it had grown dark. You hear a rustle to your left; you look, and see a deer peeking out from behind a bush. As soon as you meet its eyes, it darts away, running deeper into the woods. You follow, trying to keep up. The trees are thicker here, the path less traveled. In some places you have to step over tree roots; in others, you must move a branch out of the way in order to proceed. In the far distance, you hear the faint howling of dogs. The light that you were following has vanished; the deer is nowhere in sight. You must continue your journey alone.
You carefully make your way through the shadows. It is so dark that you can barely see; yet, somehow you instinctively know precisely where to step, where to duck. It is as if a force much greater than yourself is propelling you forward. But to what?
You move aside some thick branches so you can pass, and you get your answer. You have reached a clearing. In the middle is a gigantic tree, much larger than any tree you have ever seen. Its branches reach the starry heavens. The sky above is a primordial nebula of swirling stars and clouds. The full moon shines down, providing silvery illumination. The roots of the tree are huge and gnarled, reaching down to the Underworld. This is the World Tree, the Tree of Life, the axis of the world. You take a tentative step out of the woods, and you instantly become aware of the earth beneath your feet. You feel a steady thumping beneath your feet, resonating with the beating of your heart, and you realize that you are hearing the earth’s heartbeat, beating in time with your own heart. You are here, at the beginning, where all things have its creation, and it is the earth who is the creator.
You move slowly towards the Tree of Life, in reverence. You see a timid head peek around the tree’s trunk. It is the deer who had guided you through the thicket. From the shadows on the other side of the tree a wolf-like dog jumps out. Both animals watch you as you walk towards the tree. You reach out and touch its massive trunk. A jolt of energy, like electricity, courses through your body. It startles you, and you take a step back. You take a deep breath, and ask the tree, the earth who created it, the moon in the sky and the deer and the dog, permission to commune. You reach out again, and this time the energy isn’t so harsh; it is warm and inviting. You feel yourself being filled with the energy of the Tree of Life, the energy of life itself.
You sit down, facing the tree, and feel the energy circling within you. With a slight burst of energy from the earth beneath you, the energy begins to spiral up your spine.
With your eyes still closed, spiral the energy from the Tree of Life up your spine. As you breathe in, the energy spirals up through the top of your head. As you breathe out, the energy bursts out through the top of your head, showering down around you. Breathe in, and draw the energy back in, and spiral it up your spine. Breathe out, and the energy showers down in a brilliant display. As you do this, you find your own energy spiralling with that of the Tree of Life. You also notice the earth giving you some of her own energy, so as you draw the energy in, it grows.
You go to spiral the energy one final time. As you exhale, the energy does not shower down. Rather, it stretches up and out, forming a tree. Each subsequent inhalation solidifies this tree. As the Tree of Life is the world’s axis, this tree is your own personal axis. Try and determine what kind of tree was formed.
You become aware of your body once again. Focus on your breath, trying to retain the image of your tree. Then, come back to your body. Stretch, and feel how your body feels with your newly acquired energy.
