I feel it not only facinating, but nessicary to take a look at Folk magick and the methods they employ. Now, most Folk magick is based on protection and healing, and some serve some pretty out there purposes, but for now lets take a look at some common healing tactics from way back in the day!
It is important to remember that not all old remedies are healthy, in fact some of them are just downright ridiculous given what we know now, so a word of caution: DON'T TRY THESE REMEDIES UNLESS YOU CAN BE SURE THAT YOU CAN DO IT SAFELY AND HEALTHILY.
Alzheimers Disease: Drink cowslip tea OR you can opt to sleep with a dirty diaper. (This is absolutly true, I assure you I didn't make this up)
Arthritis: A poultice of warm ginseng between two white linen sheets and applied overnight. OR Carry a buckeye in your left pocket, changing it when the joint pain eases to prevent further flare up. OR If a tornado hits your home, anyone under its roof with arthritis will be immidiately and permenantly cured. (this does NOT mean purposly to put yourself in the danger of a tornado.) OR Wearing copper OR Moonshine.
Backaches: when you hear the first bird of spring, turn three quick summersaults OR take off all clothes from the waist up and have someoe rub graveyard dust (ground valerian root) over your back and without dressing, stand on your head for a count of one hundred before washing the herb dust off your back with whiskey.
Bladder Infections: make a cake using your own urine and eat it, OR you can make a cowslip or dandelion tea.
Constipation: Take a spoonful of Lard or turpentine.
Cuts and lacerations: Spider webs over open cuts will stop them bleeding.
Preventing Injury: (I don't at all condone this, as this animal is particularly special to me and I imagine the only way this would prevent injury is obtaining the object in question will probably render you unable to move from your bed for the rest of your life due to severe mauling.) The right eye of a wolf worn in the right sleeve of your coat will prevent injury.
Gout: Take a young dog to bed with you, it works better if the dog is yellow.
Poison Ivy: A wash made from buttermilk and vinegar
Surgery: Schedule it when the moon is waning and in the sign of Pisces or Aries.
Toothaches: Put vanilla extract on the tooth OR sleep on wet ashes.
Ulcers: Okra and applesauce OR tying a peice of meat soaked in buttermilk to your stomach.
Again I caution you, that these remedies were used because doctors were 1.) too expensive and 2.) often too far away to take the patient due, these are remedies of last resort often times, and you should thoroughly research the remedies before attempting any of them. However, in my research, folk remedies DO tell of alot of herbal properties and I must say they aren't wrong most of the time. However the use of poisonous herbs in healing is also quite prolific, so do be careful!
