There's some drama going on with family stuff right now and thought this might be fun to talk about. Not the drama, but just what family is. What is family to you? Is it only blood relations, or do you find the majority of your family are your friends?
What is family? And how important is it to keep family members in your life, even if they are toxic?

To me, family is definitely NOT those related by blood. Most of who I consider to be family are not related to me at all.
Since I am planning my wedding (and I am sorry to bring the stupid event up "yet again," but I am using this to illustrate a point) I have found that I have absolutely no one to go in the procession. My two uncles (who live in the same city as I do) and my half sister never even responded to the invitation. However, I have a few friends that I know I can call on no matter what, and have chosen to honor them in the procession, as to me, they are family.
As for toxic family members, I must admit to having mixed feelings. On the one hand there is a sense of duty to those family members, but at the same time there needs to be a sense of duty to oneself. I have never disowned a family member but have chosen to severely limit my exposure to them. Such is the case of my mother in law. I will not further any drama with her by confronting her for being a crap-talker and for stirring up stuff. However, I am also not planning on being daughter dearest. Work is a wonderful excuse, especially since I am going to be getting a second job (with or without my husband's blessing, I might add). It is just my nonconfrontational way of dealing with things I guess.

Well I have cut toxic family out of my life. I used to have that strong feeling of duty, but after being burned so many times, practically having my heart torn out by these people, I can't do it anymore. I can't let them do this to me.
It annoys me when people imply that some of my friends are not my family. We had one aunt sitting there telling me I shouldn't have any friends in my wedding because they will not last. Well Ash is my sister, and that's that. I love her, and she is always there for me. That's family. Just like you are my family, even without us marrying brothers at this point. And the coven is my family.
